Firm profile: The law firm of Laurence R. Dry, M.D., J.D. and Associates specializes in medical/legal consulting, medical negligence, medical products liability, medical peer review, expert witness testimony and other health law issues.
After 20 plus years of successful surgical practice, Dr. Dry obtained a law degee from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1988. Dr. Dry had been actively engaged in medical-legal consulting for 10 years prior to the start of his law practice. The firm has enjoyed success primarily in the areas of medical negligence, medical products liability and medical peer review.
Dr. Dry has been counsel for a number of very substantial verdicts and settlements. In the past three years we have had settlements of $1.5 million and $2.2 million and verdicts of $7.6 million and $1 million. We pride ourselves in diligently litigating catastrophic injury cases which ultimately means that we simply cannot accept a great many cases. We also strive to keep the expenses of litigation contained so that our clients reap their rightful share of the verdicts and settlements.
Medical malpractice cases are taken on a referral, association, or a consulting basis. Cases have been successfully settled or litigated in a number of midwestern and southeastern states including Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois. Cases taken from areas where substantial travel is involved require appropriate reimbursement.
The firm has handled a number of medical product cases involving several major manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, health products and medical devices. We avoid what we consider "fad" cases such as breast implants and pedicle screw cases.
Medical peer review cases have included examining hospitals or departments when they were performing in a dysfunctional manner, advising in the areas of peer review or quality assurance, serving as a hearing officer and/or providing independent reviewers.
The firm's most notorious case was one which served as the focus for a special on the NBC nightly news in 1992. The case involved a doctor in Kentucky who was negligently credentialed by a hospital and the exposure of a doctor who provided more or less "bogus board certification" for some phsyicians who could not pass the traditional boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
